    The Structure and Function of Membrane Proteins, studied by Cryo-EM

    Research

    The laboratory of Henning Stahlberg at the EPFL is employing high-resolution electron microscopy to study neurodegeneration and membrane protein systems. To this end, the group is developing imaging technology in the areas of coherent electron diffractive imaging, single-electron illumination of biological samples, sample preparation and data analysis software systems such as focus-em.org. Stahlberg has studied various membrane protein systems by cryo-electron microscopy over the last decade, and has characterized water and ion channels, transporters, and secretion system membrane proteins, as well as protein aggregation (alpha-synuclein). The work of Stahlberg has been recognized by the NSF Career Award (USA).
